Kournas Lake is the sole freshwater lake on Crete. It is located on the northern foot of the Lefka Ori mountain range and it is only 4 km away from Georgioupolis.
Such picturesque scenery is quite rare for the island, but also very impressive. The eco-system of the lake and the river Delfinas, which flows into the Cretan Sea, is one of the most important biotopes on the island and that is why it has been declared a protected area under the Natura 2000 Network. Many migratory species of birds find shelter here, while there are a lot of indigenous species of Crete and the Eastern Mediterranean - among them a rare type of turtle of the Emydidae family (Malaclemys terrapin).
During the summer, when the water reaches lower levels, sandy beaches are created – a perfect place for you to relax. You can visit the lake for a swim, for a walk, for a ride on a pedalo (paddle boat) or even for a picnic by its shores. You can also enjoy your meal or your coffee in one of the small taverns of the area, enjoying the view of the turquoise waters of this magnificent lake.
Mythos Palace frequently organizes hiking trips from the resort to Kournas Lake. Ask for further information on our next expedition!
