Fauna and Flora

In the biotopes of Georgioupolis, they have been recorded up to nowadays 174 species of birds: some of them live here as permanent, other rest on their way to immigration and other pass the winter. Birds as the herons, the cormorants, the swans, the widgeons, the rednecks and the wagtails, meet themselves so much in estuaries of rivers and the beach as well as in the lake, giving occasion for observation. Many of them are considered as infrequent and world threatened types, as the duck of marsh (Anytha nyroca), the moygkriti's (Botaururs stallaris), the stiktaeto's (Aquilla clanga) and the mayropetritis (Falco eleonorae). Also in the region live species as the spitofido (Elaphe situla), the water turtle Mauremys caspica, the marine turtle caretta caretta and the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus.

In the region are met roughly 400 species of plants. Characteristically they are the wickers, the prinos, the pikrodafni, the myrties, the Cretan kyklamino, the aquatic and hydric plants of rivers and lake as potamogeitonas (potamogeton pectinatus) and ammophilous, as the sensitive krinaki of sand that embelishes the immense seaside. Unique however, perhaps all around Crete, is the aria's forest (type dry) that its local name is azilakas.

An old forest, that is offered for walks in all the seasons of time.
