Chania

Chania, the second largest city of Crete, is also known as “Venice of the East”. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations of the island, due to the unique allure of the “old city”, the emblematic Venetian harbor and its magnificent architecture.

If you wish to explore Chania, stroll in the historical districts of the old city. Start from the Venetian harbor and admire the view from the Firkas Fortress, discover the manorial district of Topanas and move on to the beautiful Jewish quarter, where there is the archaeological museum, housed in St. Francis’ Church.

Then, proceed to the erstwhile Turkish quarter of Splanzia, where you can admire the Venetian Church of St. Rocco. Next, head for the sea to be amazed by the shipyards, the Grand Arsenal and the Giali Tzamissi (Seaside Mosque), the first mosque built on Crete.

Take pictures with the famous Lighthouse of Chania in the background and enjoy your walk at the multicolored Venetian harbor, which is always alive and vibrant: here, there is an array of restaurants, cafés and bars. Do not linger here for long, though – explore the maze-like alleys of the old city and find your own favorite spot.
